As per usual, it was a quiet month and a half off for us. It’s a bit sad to say, but we’re used to sitting on the couch February and early March wondering what the heck went wrong again. Simply, we need to be better and raise our ceiling. Easier said than done, but necessity is a strong motivator.
Just a couple weeks ago we jumped on the ice for the Syncrude National Grand Slam in Fort McMurray. We had a blast dealing with the challenges of playing with the 5 rock rule. I noticed our desire and motivation during this event was high… and we performed with a 5-0 round-robin record dispatching Kevin Martin in the process and getting a tiny bit of satisfaction beating Jeff Stoughton. Alas, we didn’t have the quarter-final game we wanted and our opponent (Team Laycock) played well in the win. However, a very solid performance when compared to the 3 months of struggle we’ve endured.
What’s next for us? A fun one in Grande Prairie this weekend! The Pomeroy Inn & Suites Prairie Showdown is a well-run event. It can be a tough time of year to draw teams (re: burn out and team upheavals!), but we’re grateful for the support Pomeroy and other sponsors provide to this event, as well as Renee Sonnenberg’s time organizing an excellent tournament. A very good women’s field in attendance with some international flair on the docket (Eve Muirhead, Silvana Tirinzoni). The men’s field is a bit smaller (12 teams) but some notables in attendance are Mr. Stoughton and Nik Edin.
After GP, it’ll be a couple weeks off before the final event of the year – The Players’ Championship in Summerside, PEI. It will be an amazing men’s and women’s field and nothing like fighting to be the only team to end their season with a W – that’s the goal anyways! We’ll be using the 5 rock rule again for this event… what are your thoughts on it? Like? Dislike? You can read my thoughts as previously blogged on the Sportsnet Grand Slam site here.
